Innovation and Novelty in the Evolution of Plants

Phenotypic innovation, information theory, and phylogenetic discordance in deep time.

Episodes of phenotypic innovation often coincide with episodes of extensive phylogenetic conflict, in both phenotypic characters and across the genome. I will discuss new approaches to tease apart alternative sources of conflict and innovation, while also contributing a stronger understanding of the role of conflict-generating processes in driving episodic bursts of phenotypic innovation.
