Toward a completely open-source 3D printable laboratory: The Biological Affordable Imaging with Raspberry Pi (BAIR) System. Low-cost, repairable lab equipment is a rarity within the biological sciences. Our goal is to enable science at all levels from amateur to professional and lower the cost of entry into the biological sciences. We developed and remixed (redesigned existing models) multiple 3D printable pieces of lab equipment that are quickly printed, assembled, and repaired for a fraction of the cost of retail equivalents. Here we present a novel, largely 3D printed imaging system that utilizes a Raspberry Pi computer and a custom, easy to use GUI (graphical user interface) with multiple complementary pieces of 3D printable lab equipment to enable a wide range of scientific experiments and analyses. Our hope is that with the development of the BAIR system (Biological Affordable Imaging with Raspberry Pi), others will build and improve upon our designs and help us lower barriers to enable science for all.
