Biodiversity Informatics & Herbarium Digitization

The Herbarium of Economic Botany of Ecuador (QUSF).

The Herbarium of Economic Botany of Ecuador QUSF of Universidad San Francisco de Quito (Ecuador), contains around 28,000 preserved vascular plants of the Ecuadorian flora. These specimens contain a wealth of information on uses and economic value that, along with field notes acts as a major regional as well as national reference center. Research is primarily focused on the taxonomy, distribution, use and conservation of Ecuadorian plants. In addition, the Herbarium’s plant identification service is extensively used by local and international researchers as well as by interested members of the public. Asteraceae and Solanaceae are the most represented Families in the collection. Almost half of the specimens come from highly diverse Andean cloud forests. The collection has specimens of 23, out of 24, provinces of Ecuador, Pichincha being the most represented province. Type specimens include holotypes of Larnax macasiana S. Deanna, Leiva & Barboza, and Tiputinia foetida P.E. Berry & C. Woodw. In this presentation, new additions and improvements carried out during the last year are presented. Additionally, future development plans are described.
