Physiology Crum, Alexandra [1], Hegeman, Adrian [2], Radford, Zachary [3], Yang, Ya [4]. Changes in Ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum) specialized metabolism in response to high light and wounding stress based on untargeted LC-MS and molecular networking. Plant specialized metabolism aids plants in mediating stresses and underlies a species’ medicinal effect. The order Caryophyllales includes several important medicinal species and has a unique pattern of lineages with either tyrosine- or phenylalanine-dominant specialized metabolism. The tension between these two metabolite profiles across the order is especially interesting because phenylalanine-derived metabolites especially are canonically known to play important roles in stress responses. Ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum; Aizoaceae), belongs to a tyrosine-dominant specialized metabolism lineage, and is often used as a model plant to study salt stress. To begin exploring the roles tyrosine- and phenylalanine-derived metabolites play in different stress responses, ice plant metabolites were elicited through high light and wounding stress, and characterized through untargeted LC-MS, LC-MS/MS, and molecular networking.
