Floristics & Taxonomy Onuminya, Temitope [1], Ogundipe, Oluwatoyin [1], Ogunkanmi, Mubarak [2], Ogunkanmi, Adebayo [3]. Morphological Characterization of Some Cowpea Accessions from IITA, Ibadan. Characterization of available germplasm is a necessary step to facilitate breeding program. To this end, twenty genotypes of Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L) Walp), an important legume in Nigeria, were collected from International Institute of Tropical Agriculture. The genotypes were planted in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Morphological characters of seedlings were assessed following the International Board for Plant Genetic Resource cowpea descriptor list. Twenty nine (29) of these descriptors were used in this study. Eighteen accessions showed semi-erect habit while the remaining two showed erect plant growth habit. Days of first flowering was observed among the samples and these range from 35-45 days while days of first pod ranges between 37-47 days. Peduncle length measurement ranges between 12-35 cm. Pod length ranges from10.61-22.81 cm while seed length ranges from 6.10-9.93 mm among sampled accessions. Morphological relationship among the genotypes showed a dendogram with three clusters and one out-group. Cluster A consists of six genotypes, Cluster B consists of nine genotypes, and Cluster C consists of four genotypes. The only accession outside these cluster is Tvu-12501, this is due to the uniqueness of the terminal petiole length, which is not common to others. The cluster analysis substantiated the existence of diversity among the twenty genotypes for the morphological traits studied. This project is funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Institutional Based Research Grant.
