Complete chloroplast genomes of seven species of Elsholtzia (Lamiaceae): Comparative and phylogenetic analyses. Elsholtzia Willd. is a herbaceous plant distributed in the temperate regions, containing approximately 40 species. Most species occur in temperate regions and the N hemisphere, and the greatest centers of diversity in the genus are in East Asia, especially China, Japan, and Korea. In this study, chloroplast genome sequences of seven species of Elsholtzia including three endemic species (E. byeonsanensis, E. hallasanensis, and E. minima) in Korea were obtained by the Illumina HiSeq platform and compared with the previously published chloroplast genomes of other taxa in this genus. The total length of seven chloroplast genomes in this study ranged from 150,628 bp to 151,326 bp with similar GC contents (37.8% to 37.9%) and comprised 113 genes including 80 protein-coding genes, four rRNA, and 29 tRNA genes. Sequence analysis showed that chloroplast regions with high nucleotide diversity (Pi > 0.05) were ycf1,rps16-trnQ(UUG), psbI-trnG(UCC), ndhC-trnV(UAC), and ndhF-trnL(UAG), respectively. Phylogenetic analyses showed that Elsholtziaformed a monophyletic clade, and infrageneric positions of all species were highly supported in this genus. Our results will be the basis for the selection of molecular markers in further phylogenetic studies, and this study will provide useful information for the evolution and conservation studies of Elsholtzia.
