Comparative Genomics/Transcriptomics

Leebens-Mack, Jim [1].

An estimate of gene content and chromosomal organization in the last common ancestor of extant angiosperms.

Comparative analysis of genomes distributed across the seed plant phylogeny enables inference of minimum gene content and chromosomal structure of the ancestral angiosperm genome. Our analyses provide support for the last common ancestor of all extant angiosperms having seven chromosomes as hypothesized by Verne Grant and others. Comparative analyses also elucidate the dynamics of genome duplication across the angiosperm phylogeny and the evolution of a derived ZW sex chromosome system in Amborella trichopoda, sister species to all other extant angiosperms.
