Biodiversity Informatics & Herbarium Digitization Yang, Yue [1], Jin, JianJun [2], Eaton, Deren [3]. 3D floral morphological model and color variances in Pedicularis. Floral morphological variation is a fundamental aspect of diversity in angiosperms, and plays an important role in many botanical disciplines, from plant taxonomy, to evolution, and pollination ecology. Traditional methods for measuring morphological variation of flowers typically involve taking simple measurements on live specimens, or even cruder measurements on dried and pressed herbarium specimens. These measurements often fail to capture detailed geometric shapes, color variation, and possible covariances among such complex measurements. Building 3D morphometric models has emerged as a powerful alternative for preserving and studying flower morphological variation, but has yet to be broadly applied. Here we implemented a recently developed protocol by LemeĢnager et al. to build 3D flower models for 50 samples (>30 species) of Pedicularis, a clade of flowering plants with exceptional flower diversity. We demonstrate novel methods for extracting shape-associated color distributions from flower models, and describe ongoing work to model complex character evolution and identify genes associated with floral variation in Pedicularis.
