The anatomical patterning and genetic rewiring underlying diverse fruit dehiscence mechanisms in poppies.

The Papaveraceae exhibit dry fruits derived from superior bicarpellate gynoecia with a myriad of mechanisms to disperse their seeds. Fruits can be indehiscent or dehiscent. The latter can exhibit longitudinal complete (acropetal and basipetal) or incomplete (poricidal) dehiscence, or form transverse mericarps. We studied fruit anatomy in 13 species of three subfamilies, to assess common underlying anatomical features and autapomorphic shifts shaping the dehiscence zones and therefore seed dispersal strategies. In addition, to identify the genes shaping fruit patterning in Papaveraceae, we selected a single species Bocconia frutescens, as it possesses a longitudinally dehiscent fruit with a persistent commissural ring, convergent with that of the model species Arabidopsis thaliana. Fruit development in Arabidopsis is controlled by FRUITFULL (FUL), responsible for proper cell division during valve development; REPLUMLESS (RPL), controlling replum identity; and SHATTERPROOF (SHP1/2), patterning the dehiscence zone. Next, SHP1/2 positively regulate INDEHISCENT (IND), responsible for the formation of the lignified layer, as well as ALCATRAZ (ALC) and SPATULA (SPT), which redundantly control the identity of the nonlignified layer. The entire network is negatively regulated by APETALA2 (AP2). Expression data of all gene homologs in B. frutescens points to putative maintained roles of FUL and AP2 in fruit wall proliferation, acting in an antagonistic manner to ALC and RPL homologs restricted to the dehiscence zone. We discuss the rewiring of the fruit genetic network in light of the changes in the genetic complements present in basal and core eudicots. Finally, we examine putative changes in the network that best explain dehiscence diversity across poppies.
