Taxon searches in the Germplasm Resources Information Network.

Over the past several years, most of the taxonomy pages of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) website have been updated and restructured. The latest revisions provide taxon searches that are on separate tabs within the same page. The Browse tab allows searches on family, genus, species, or common name, with returned results at the rank of family, genus, and/or species. The family search now offers selection by order and has an infrafamilial name search option. Genus has been enhanced to permit searches on infrageneric names. The species search includes options for common names and infraspecific epithets. If a species is not present in the database but its genus is, a link to the genus record will be included in the results. A distribution-only search will return a spreadsheet of the taxa in GRIN Taxonomy that have distribution data for the selected geography. All results can be sorted, filtered, and exported, which has greatly increased data availability. Finally, distribution data are displayed for species searches that are based on a scientific name. The updated searches offer greater access to taxonomic information and let new and experienced users switch quickly between ranks based on their search parameters.
