New strategies using iNaturalist observation data. iNaturalist is an online social network of people sharing biodiversity information to help each other learn about nature and identify species around the world. The primary goal of the platform is to connect people to nature by enabling them to make and share observations of living things. A secondary goal of the platform is to generate scientifically valuable biodiversity data. As of today, these data include more than 86,000,000 observations of more than 345,000 species made by nearly two million users worldwide with over 41,000,000 plant observations around the world. This workshop will highlight various ways in which iNaturalist biodiversity data can be used in botanical research. We will highlight successful applications of the iNaturalist Project feature to engage with a broad community of Citizen Scientists to work towards a common goal of using these observations as scientific data. We will explore the strengths and potential shortcomings of a crowdsourced species identification system, and discuss best practices and strategies for effectively navigating it. Research applications will be presented and hands-on sessions demonstrating methods for accessing iNaturalist data. These applications are useful for generating fine-scale species distribution maps as well as voucher specimen labels. We will present case studies leveraging these data for use in cutting edge climate change research, landscape genomics, and non-native species monitoring. New and existing users of iNaturalist are expected to gain additional understanding and use of iNaturalist data. Workshop participants should bring their own laptop for the hands-on sessions.
