Conference Wide Parsley, Kathryn [1], Callis-Duehl, Kris [2]. Taking the Pain Out of Assessment: How to Measure Impact in Classrooms and Beyond. How well is your outreach, classroom research, or broader impacts program going? Are the student outcomes meeting your goals? Assessment doesn’t have to be painful! In this two-hour hands-on assessment activity, learn how to measure impact of educational activities and programs on students who participate in the broader impacts’ aspects of your grants and outreach activities conducted within and beyond formal learning environments. We will discuss what formative and summative assessment is, and why it is important. You will Learn about tools and methods for assessment and discuss your particular needs for the classroom and/or projects. We will talk about using backwards design to assess programs already in progress or forwards design for programs that are in the brainstorming stage. This workshop will be tailored to you and your needs! You can come with early-stage projects, and we can help you design an assessment plan. Or, perhaps you are in the middle of a project and are running into difficulties with assessment – we can work through these issues as well. We will also provide a list of assessments that may come in handy which you can use “out-of-the-box.” We will walk you through the process of getting CITI training (national board training for working with student data) and compiling an IRB application (Institutional Review Board), which is required for all data collected on student outcomes that may be published. With this, we will discuss as a group the ethical issues that arise when working with different levels of students, things to consider in creating programs and how to ethically collect data on students of all ages. We will also cover the steps of how to partner with assessment experts to develop tools that will be useful specifically for your own measurement goals. We will discuss how to find assessment experts, how to budget for them, and when to include them in your project design. If you are new to project and program assessment or a veteran, there is something for everyone.
