Characterization of the entire USDA germplasm collection of Amaranthus.

As the climate changes and world population grows, the genetic improvement of crops has become more important. The U.S. National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) supports agricultural production by acquiring, conserving, evaluating, documenting, and distributing crop and related wild relative germplasm. Amaranthus is a genus containing about 60 species, including (pseudo)grains and leafy greens crops, agricultural weeds, and endemics. The NPGS maintains over 3000 accessions from over 40 species of Amaranthus. Here, we used reduced representation genomic sequencing (RADcap) to genotype almost 3000 of these samples, along with recently collected samples, to characterize genomic diversity in the collection. Using population genomic and phylogenetic analyses, we assess the diversity within each species and estimate the number of mischaracterized accessions within the germplasm database. With these analyses, we will be able to help the NPGS evaluate and document the germplasm collection for Amaranthus.
