Hyperspectral Imaging to Measure Degree of Stress in Wild Four O'Clock (Mirabilis nyctaginea, Nyctaginaceae).

Adequate tolerance of light stress is an important part of survival for plants in the wild. A plant under extreme stress must be able to adapt to these abiotic stressors to ensure reproductive success and general survival.Stress experiments can yield valuable information on the genes and metabolites involved in the stress response, but determining the degree of stress response without causing additional stress can be problematic.  We conducted a time-course experiment with Mirabilis Nyctaginea, using high light stress. PCA and hyperspectral analysis was performed to demonstrate a significant difference between high light and control groups. Non-invasive hyperspectral scanning and a PCA analysis performed later on M. Nyctaginea showed that individuals exposed to high light demonstrated plasticity and exhibited expected and normal wavelength patterns. These methods were chosen because of their ability to gather information without changing the composition of M. Nyctaginea individuals. This experimental procedure provides evidence to explain why M. Nyctaginea can be so prolific and hardy, despite stressful growing conditions.
