A Synopsis of Lichenology Research in Colorado and Plans for Future Exploration.

Colorado is a vast and wondrous state nestled in the middle of the continental United States, whose biodiversity is influenced by multiple biogeographical and evolutionary histories converging and overlapping within the state. This is coupled with an incredible diversity of elevations, habitats, substrates, and microclimates. The resulting ecological gradients, unmatched by many other regions of the continent, yield a prediction that the state of Colorado is likely a biodiversity hotspot for lichen species richness. Despite this, there exists only limited prior lichenological research within the state’s boundaries, resulting from dedicated efforts of only a few individuals who have laid the groundwork for what is to be a great undertaking of documenting the substantial and cryptic Colorado lichen diversity. In this presentation, we will discuss this history of lichenological research in Colorado, and present our plans for future research in the state to help build new and much needed knowledge of the state’s lichen biodiversity.
