Synthesis of silver nanoparticales from Ephedra intermedia and evaluation of their fungal activity.

Nanotechnology refers to the creation and utilization of materials with at least one dimension in the nano range. It is a term that describes technologies which operate at a scale of 1 to 100 nanometers. Nanotechnology has paved the path for the development of new nanomaterials and examining their properties. Metal nanoparticles have been largely studied because of their specific characteristics such as optical, electronic, magnetic, catalytic and antimicrobial properties. However, conventional methods to synthesize nanoparticles are highly toxic and damaging to environment. Therefore, due to growing usage of nanomaterials there is need to develop nontoxic, clean, simple and ecofriendly procedures for their synthesis. The primary aim of current study was green route synthesize silver nanoparticles (NPs) by using medicinal plant Ephedra intermedia and evaluation of their antifungal activity. Silver nanoparticles were formulated from methanolic extract of Ephedra intermedia and their characterization was performed. Further, they were analyzed for antifungal activity by using disc diffusion method. For NPs synthesis different concentrations of silver nitrate solution were prepared and reacted with extract in different ratios. The change in color indicated the formation of nanoparticles. Results from UV visible spectroscopy and FTIR spectroscopy were also satisfactory and the obtained results suggested that the formulated silver nanoparticles possess efficient antifungal activity. Thus this method can be used for benign synthesis of nanoparticles and can be employed as antifungal drug.
