The true blueberries (Vaccinium sect. Cyanococcus) - A first complete phylogenomic hypothesis of diploid taxa and preliminary investigation into polyploids.

The true blueberries of North America (Vaccinium sect. Cyanococcus) have been intensively studied for over a century. However, with species estimates ranging from 9 to 24 and much confusion regarding species boundaries, this ecologically and economically valuable group remains inadequately understood at a basic evolutionary and taxonomic level. Constructing a genomic dataset and verifying ploidy via flow cytometry, we present the first phylogenomic hypothesis of diploid blueberries as a first step toward understanding the evolutionary history and taxonomy of this notoriously difficult species complex. We will additionally discuss future plans to leverage this diploid framework phylogeny and allelic data to disentangle the history of polyploids.
