Gene expression and functional analysis of SERF genes in Arabidopsis thaliana..

The importance of the plant vascular system for delivery of water, nutrients and photosynthates is well established. Aside from these functions, there is evidence that signal molecules (low MW compounds, RNAs and proteins) are transported throughout the plant via the phloem translocation stream, which could have a role in the response to biotic and abiotic stress, as well as coordinating the plant developmental program. We have previously reported the presence of different RNA species (such as potentially non-coding and mRNAs) and proteins in the pumpkin phloem sap. Some of these mRNAs belong to the SERF (small EDRK rich factor) gene family. The function of these genes is unknown in plants, but in animals there is evidence that suggests that these are neuropeptides, in some cases involved the formation of amyloid plaques in humans. A more thorough examination of this gene family showed that there are three putative SERF genes in Arabidopsis thaliana, AT2G23090, AT3G24100 and AT4G13615. Regarding AT2G23090 we also identified that the ORF partially overlaps with a noncoding RNA termed AT2G07875, which is a potential lncNAT (long noncoding natural antisense transcript) of the gene transcript. Based on preliminary observations in silenced plants, we propose that the SERF gene family and the lncNAT have a function in Arabidopsis development. These results, in addition to bioinformatic analyses, will be further discussed.
