Bioprospecting and Floristics: A Place-Based, Multifaceted Approach to Undergraduate Research.

Studies have shown that undergraduate student research-experiences contribute to student retention and matriculation. The research experience we offer to our students at FVCC connects learning and the development of their identity as a scientist to place, community and the career competencies needed for a future STEM career. Although the specific research experience is place-based, the scientific inquiry explores a current global issue in the biomedical field, namely antibiotic resistance. Students who participate with this project will have an experience that extends well beyond a traditional classroom setting. Students will gain valuable field and laboratory skills, explore academic and career pathways, and develop important 21st century career competencies. This is accomplished by 1. providing a place-based undergraduate research experience focused on testing local plant and fungal species for antibiotic potential, 2. connecting students to nature and their community through the creation and publication of visual guides to locally occurring plant, mushroom and lichen species for the broader public, and 3. providing opportunities for students to present and publish their findings. Through this project, that is steeped in research experiences, we hope to increase student retention and provide future academic and professional pathways for students showing interest in the biological or biomedical sciences.
