Bryophytes and Lichens on the Edges of Changing Ecosystems

Lendemer, James [1], Briscoe, Laura [2].

Integrating cryptogams into the biodiversity universe: An evidence-based standards and practices framework.

Life on earth spans a dazzling spectrum of biological diversity, a universe of evolutionary and ecological possibilities. Cryptogams are some of the most frequent and diverse stars in the universe of life, bright constellations of algae, bryophytes, cyanobacteria and fungi. Many of them are linked by shared ecological requirements, functions and relationships in symbioses or other biotic interactions. Yet, in spite of their abundance and dynamic brilliance, cryptogams generally remain poorly integrated into broad, cross-taxon studies of biodiversity let alone general theory. Here we synthesize data from across different cryptogamic groups to propose a series of data standards and best practices for these organisms. If adopted these could advance integration of millions of species into the studies aimed at understanding patterns and processes in the natural world.
