Black Botanical Legacy: Fostering a Community of Equity in Botanical Sciences

Halane, Morgan [1].

Walking the Tightrope of a Black Botanist Career.

Black scientists face both conscious and unconscious biases which disadvantage us at all career stages. These challenges, which include generational wealth gaps rooted in the Atlantic slave trade and persistent systemic racism, make navigating the already demanding journey of a scientific career even more harrowing. Using specific examples from both lived experience and scholarly literature, this talk will explore not only the difficulties we face as Black scientists but also provide actionable items to lead our scientific communities toward more equitable and just realities.
