Decades of Success: Bureau of Land Management Alaska and the Seeds of Success Program.

Wildland native seed collections are the foundation for native plant materials development. Only by increasing the quality and quantity of available native plant materials can we restore healthy, resilient, and adaptive ecosystems. Seeds of Success (SOS) is the national native seed collection program that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Plant Conservation and Restoration Program uses as a first step to producing native plants for restoration of public lands. For more than 20 years, BLM Alaska has focused SOS collection efforts on native seeds throughout the state’s four seed transfer zones to ensure that a full range of genetically diverse seed is available for restoration and research on disturbed mining lands, post-fire landscapes, and recreation sites. Partners including the Alaska Center for Conservation Science and the Alaska Plant Material Center have helped to plan collections, clean, process, store and increase SOS collections for future use on BLM restoration projects. Since 2002, 1071 collections totaling more than 65 pounds have been made of native seed throughout the state of Alaska. Since 2010, more than 80 of those collections have been increased in garden boxes and field cultivation methods to nearly 100 lbs. BLM Alaska’s future goals of SOS include continued collection from underrepresented portions of the state and developing techniques to enhance cultivation and seed increases on a larger scale.
