Embrapa Reference Collections for Genetic Resources.

Reference collections sample and document the variability and geographic range of target species of interest and make preserved specimens available for basic and applied research. Embrapa is the public Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation and harbors reference collections mainly to support research on genetic resources and biodiversity. The primary mission is to document the memory and to promote the present and future use of the specimens for research activities focused on innovation for agriculture, livestock, and bioeconomy. The activities involve the curation, enrichment, maintenance, documentation and public availability of the specimens for in-person consultations, loan requests, or online access. Three solutions for innovation referring to the Zoological Collections; a Plant Extracts Library; and the Herbaria, totaling 16 activities, organize the management of these reference collections. The Zoological Collections solution for innovation encompass four collections totaling around 40,000 samples. Two units houses bee specimens and document the importance of these animals for pollination, honey production and ecosystem services. They are located at the Bees Collection from Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology and at the subcollection of bees belonging to the Entomological Collection at Embrapa Eastern Amazon. The Nematodes of the genus Meloidogyne is a distinctive cryopreserved collection, representing pest species affecting plants, located at Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology, for long-term maintenance, with collaboration of Embrapa Temperate Agriculture, for the recovery and living culture of needed specimens. The Quarantine Acari and Insects collection supports activities related to the interception of pests eventually found in plant imports and exports and is located at Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology. The Plant Extracts Library is a unique bank of standardized plant extracts with 600 hundred reference samples at Embrapa Tropical Agroindustry. The third solution for innovation encompasses seven indexed herbaria totaling 410,000 exsiccates and associated dried tissues in silica gel, flesh tissues in liquid preservatives, dried fruit or seeds, and wood samples. The involved herbaria are CEN at Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology; CNPO at Embrapa South Livestock; CPAP at Embrapa Pantanal; ECT at Embrapa Temperate Agriculture; HFC at Embrapa Forestry; HTSA at Embrapa Semi-arid Region; and IAN at Embrapa Eastern Amazon. Embrapa collections comprise a unique source of global importance. They have a priority on Brazilian biodiversity focusing on plant and animal species native to the country six continental biomes (Amazon, Atlantic Forest, Caatinga, Cerrado, Pampas, Pantanal). Additionally, exotic plant or animal species whose introduction is relevant to the national economy, or even invasive plant species and quarantine pests that are important for the country's sanitary defense are represented. In total, Embrapa reference collections have more than 450,000 biological samples available for research and innovation and the search for solutions and provision of services in favor of agriculture, livestock and bioeconomy, with positive impacts and benefits worldwide. Efforts for standardization, digitization and online publication of label data and images of specimens are continuous. They are reaching variable degrees of progress according to each collection. The final goal is to make all these samples data available in corporate, national and international biodiversity databases online platforms.
