Phlox at the extreme: taxonomy of Phlox of northern latitudes.

Phlox, with ca. 60 species, is the largest genus of the family Polemoniaceae and reaches its greatest diversity in western North America. Historically, representatives of the genus at high northern latitudes--in Alaska and the Yukon Territory--have presented taxonomic challenges. Recent work has improved our understanding of this diversity, thanks to availability of specimens (including critical collections by recent workers), and study across the distributions of taxa. Here, we provide an overview of the species occurring in the region, discuss taxonomy within the context of the upcoming Flora of North America treatment, and note promising directions for future research.
