Lichen Diversity of the Flathead Valley.

The Flathead Valley is home to a wide variety of lichen species and there are few reliable field guides to species in our area. The goal of this project is to conduct a broad survey of lichen found in the Flathead Valley and create a pictorial guide to our local species. Between 2018 - 2022 approximately 135 lichen samples were collected, identified, dried and deposited in the FVCC herbarium. Samples were photographed in the field, or in the lab using Helicon Stacking software. All pictures will be organized and compiled into a guide, which will be printed and made available for distribution. This guide will serve as an educational resource that is easy to use and readily available to residents and visitors of the Flathead community. By creating a field guide, we hope to engage people in lichen identification, promote literacy and interest regarding these unique organisms, and provide a resource that can be utilized as an outreach tool to promote conservation awareness throughout the community.
